The Tectonic Influence
In a data-driven world where many of our experiences take place in the digital realm, we believe architecture still has a tectonic influence. If done with care, a well-designed building will inspire through geometry, form, textures, volumes, and spatial connectivity. It will have the power—as it has in the past—to lift the spirit, inform our emotions, forge social bonds, and enlighten the mind.
Architecture is data, but monumental and tangible. When responsive, a building (as a living system) requires activation. Human conviviality flows from one space to the next. It will be effortless-yet-deliberate.
In our experience, a building with a focus on the wellbeing of its inhabitants, offers visual, environmental, auditory, olfactory or haptics qualities; it is light-filled; it breathes fresh air. It includes a deliberate composition of materials, colour, forms and more. These elements translate into ‘moments’ in time and space where people can reset, allowing architectural interventions to heal them. It is here, within this tectonic moments, that the inhabitants can interact with the sensory-activated features.
According to our latest research, Active Sensory Systems are made up of interconnected receptors that are activated by probing the environment with self-generated energy. Examples include echolocation of bats and dolphins and insect antennae. Using self-generated energy allows more control over signal intensity, direction, timing and spectral characteristics.
Following nature's models, could we imagine—and design—the new architectural buildings by enriching their tectonic influence with an Active Sensory System?
