This project is an adaptive reuse of a former house and designated heritage building. The challenge with this project was marrying the requirements of the new program while simultaneously honoring and preserving the history of the existing architecture and interior spaces. The program included three Pre-School rooms and three Toddler Rooms. The existing building footprint did take up a signifi cant portion of the useable site, however we were able to layout an appealing and successful outdoor playspace as part of the overall design package.
The program includes three Pre-School rooms and three Toddler Rooms. The existing building footprint consumes a significant portion of the useable site; however we were successfully able to create an appealing outdoor play space as part of the overall design package.
Each classroom has direct access to the outdoor play space through either a common area or patio on the second floor. With a creative hidden fire shutter and additional minor upgrades, we were able to change the building use and meet current building codes with minimal budget.
Each room is carefully designed for use of a specific age group, with proper lighting, interior finishes and furniture arrangement to enhance learning experiences. Neutral tones were selected for a more calming environment and thus promoting children to be more focused during learning sessions.
