Sick Kids Hospital had set a goal to design and oversee construction of a satellite Boomerang Children's Clinic. A patient-centered design opened up the possibilities for a contemporary space that is intuitive, educational, interactive and fun. This space is designed for toddlers, young children and teenagers who visit with their parents and healthcare supervisors. Considering the perspectives of both children and young adults from a variety of cultural backgrounds, we have incorporated whimsical and playful installations into the environment, centering around the themes of 'nature' and 'play.' The graphic silhouettes and undulating landscape used throughout the corridors, medical rooms and reception are designed to encourage the pursuit of fun outdoors.
A circular column in the reception area has been transformed into a tree, where children may write their name or draw a picture on the paper leaves. The variety of shapes, textures and colours allow for visual stimulation for children visiting the clinic. The overall aesthetic of the space allows young patients and adults to feel comfortable and at ease while in a medical setting.
